22 May 2024 - Coin Facts

Information on the South African Krugerrand Silver Coin Series

The Silver Krugerrand, introduced by the South African Mint in 2017 as an extension of the iconic gold series launched in 1967, features 99.9% silver purity and bears the classic design of Paul Kruger and the Springbok antelope. This coin is highly valued by investors and collectors for its historical significance and the prestige associated with the Krugerrand name.

Coin Name: The South African Krugerrand Silver Coin

Minted By: Rand Refinery, South Africa

First Released in: 2017

Legal Tender Value: The South African Krugerrand Silver Coin does not carry a denominated face value, which is a unique aspect of the Krugerrand series. Its value is primarily derived from its metal content and its status as a globally recognized bullion coin.

Sizes Available: 1 Ounce

Annual Mintage: The mintage of the South African Krugerrand Silver Coin is typically determined by market demand and has varied since its introduction. Unlike the gold Krugerrand, which has been minted in vast quantities over the decades, the silver version sees more limited annual releases, enhancing its appeal to collectors.

Coin Dimensions and Specification: The South African Krugerrand Silver Coin is minted from 99.9% pure silver and weighs 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams). It measures 38.7 mm in diameter and features a serrated edge. This release marked the first time the Krugerrand was issued in silver, expanding the iconic series previously available only in gold.

Coin Design:

Obverse: The obverse of the coin features the well-known portrait of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic, designed by Otto Schultz. Around the portrait are the words “South Africa” in both Afrikaans and English, reflecting the country’s bilingual heritage.

Reverse: The reverse showcases the iconic Springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa, in mid-run. This design, created by Coert Steynberg, also appears on the gold versions and includes the year of minting, silver weight, and the word “Krugerrand”.

Other Coins in the Series: The Krugerrand series originally started with gold coins introduced in 1967 and is renowned globally. The introduction of the silver and more recently platinum versions follows the same design concept, allowing investors and collectors to own the Krugerrand in various precious metals.
