The 2024 1 Ounce South African Krugerrand Silver Coin is released by the Rand Refinery. Known worldwide, the Krugerrand series has a rich history of excellence and is highly esteemed among collectors and investors. The series was first released in gold in 1967. The 1 ounce silver variant was released on the coin's 50th anniversary, in 2017.
The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Paul Kruger, the first President of the South African Republic, as designed by Otto Schultz. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions "South Africa" and "Suid-Afrika," reflecting the nation's bilingual heritage.
The reverse showcases the iconic image of a springbok antelope, a symbol of South Africa, gracefully bounding across the plains. Designed by Coert Steynberg, this motif includes the inscriptions "Krugerrand," the year of minting, and the coin's weight and fineness. Each Krugerrand silver coin is minted with a fineness of 999, ensuring its high quality and purity. Each 1 ounce silver Krugerrand coin also has a face value of 1 Rand, affirming its status as legal tender.
The Rand Refinery also produces the Krugerrand series in gold, and in platinum. The gold Krugerrand has historically been the world's best selling gold coin. The Silver Krugerrand has quickly become equally as popular.
